More than 25,000 delegates attended the annual AWS Summit London at ExCeL on the 22nd April.
The event, one of the UK’s largest cloud technology events, is produced by Sleek Events who in turn brought The Technical Department on board to design, install and manage the electrical infrastructure across the show floor.
Although the summit is just a one-day event, the build is anything but. Over six days, multiple teams work across the ExCeL site alongside more than 100 suppliers, delivering a tightly coordinated installation programme that relies on months of pre-production planning.
This is the eighth year that TTD has worked on the event with Sleek, with each year seeing the scale of the event growing, bringing with it an increasingly complex technical footprint. With more than 230 activations, 200+ sessions and a programme spanning keynote theatres, training spaces and exhibition environments across both north and south halls, the requirement for reliable, flexible power infrastructure sat at the centre of the entire production.
“It was our job to ensure that every stand, theatre and activation was safely connected and ready to go as doors opened,” said Jeff Jones, TTD’s project manager. “Every activation relies on power, whether it’s a couple of sockets or something much larger, it all has to be installed, tested and working exactly as it should before the event opens.”
From exhibition stands requiring just a handful of sockets through to larger installations with 30 or more connections, the scope was both broad and detailed. Much of that infrastructure sat out of sight, running beneath the floor across the venue, but its impact was felt everywhere.
Every cable, connector and distribution point were specified in advance, tested before leaving the warehouse, and tested again on site. Even so, as is typical with jobs of this scale the final details didn’t settle early.
